Bring out your bottles of whiskey and make a toast as loud as you can because Birmingham’s own, Tommy Shelby, is returning to grace our screens for one more time!
One of the most distinguished and stylish British period crime drama series, Peaky Blinders, is set to make a spectacular return with its much-awaited sixth season. It is a matter of great relief that the show is not taking a step back by cancelling itself like many other shows this year. So, it will be very exhilarating to see what does the mastermind himself, Steven Knight, possess in his bag of surprises. Especially after ending the fifth season with a complete shocker.
Here is what you need to know about this epic gangster drama!
We all know that season five ended with Tommy failing in successfully executing the assassination plot against Sir Oswald Mosley. So, we can say for sure that he will be desperate to find out the bloody mole in his gang. Many cliffhangers are expected to resolve in the upcoming season.
Season 6 is going to be more dramatic and tragic than the previous installments. It is reported to shift its focus towards the rise of fascism, nationalism, and racism in the early 1930s. Fans will witness the United Kingdom struggling with high rates of unemployment and poverty.
Steven Knight recently stated in an interview with NME: “[Season five] is about the rise of fascism, nationalism and racism in the ‘30s – and there are huge parallels with what’s happening in the world now. I wanted to make that a major theme of series five and the next series, because we go on into the ‘30s. I just want to explore the appeal of these simple ideas of nationalism that Mosley represented. That’s why we got Sam Claflin because we wanted someone who was really appealing and really attractive.
“The last time this happened, nine years later there was World War Two. It has consequences.”
Tommy will remain as an MP. Plus, director Anthony Byrne confirmed via Instagram that the Garrison pub has been renovated with a striking combo of black and gold colour. What will happen to Arthur now after losing Linda? What about Aunt Polly’s future with Shelby Company Ltd? All these questions will be answered in the upcoming entry.
We know how Peaky Blinders loves to give us a cliffhanger ending in every season. The fifth season also ended with Tommy holding a gun to his head. I mean, come on! We can’t imagine this show without Tommy Shelby. So, we can say that Cillian Murphy will return for season six.
Tommy’s siblings including Paul Anderson (Arthur Shelby), Harry Kirton (Finn Shelby) and Sophie Rundle (Ada Thorne) will definitely come back. Aunt Polly aka Helen McCrory also resigned from the company but she is expected to reprise her role. Sam Clafin will also make a return as Sir Oswald Mosley.
Bringing himself back from the dead, Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy) will be an interesting addition in the upcoming season.
Absolutely not! Knight has confirmed that two more seasons are on their way to grace our screens in the near future. He stated in an interview after bagging the BAFTA for Best Drama Series:
“My ambition is to make it a story of a family between two wars,” he explained, “So I’ve wanted to end it with the first air raid siren in Birmingham in 1939. It’ll take three more series to reach that point” – i.e. series five, six and seven.”
Even after the seventh season, chances of season eight’s return are still on the cards! Stay tuned for more updates!
