Netflix’s superhero drama series, The Umbrella Academy premiered its first season in February 2019 and became an instant hit. Adapted from the Dark Horse comic book of the same name, the series follows a dysfunctional family of adopted siblings who are reunited after their father’s mysterious death. The series gained a massive fan following soon after its release, prompting Netflix to announce its renewal for a second season.
Production on the second season began soon after the release of the first season and by November 2019 shooting had wrapped up. Fans need not worry about the series being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic as, in May 2020, through a unique date reveal trailer, Netflix announced that the second season will premier on 31st July 2020. The second season will have ten episodes and as usual, all episodes will be available to watch on the premiere date.
The title of the episodes are as following:
Picking up from the cliffhanger ending of the first season, in season two fans will learn that the superhero siblings are scattered across different time periods in and around Dallas, Texas. Thus forcing Number 5 to try and (again) reunites his adopted family. The siblings will face another apocalyptic event and try to solve it while figuring out how to return to the present timeline, all the while being hunted by Swedish hunters.
Most of the primary casts from the first season are set to return in the second. This means Academy award Nominee Ellen Page (Vanya) will reprise her role, alongside, Tom Hopper (Luther), David Castañeda (Diego), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Alison), Robert Sheehan (Klaus), Aidan Gallagher (Number 5), Justin H Min (Ben) and other familiar faces will be seen too. And although unconfirmed, there is a big chance of Colm Feore (Sir Reginald Hargreeves), Jordon Claire Robbins (Mom), and Adam Godwell (Pogo) returning to portray their characters from the first season. But whether Cameron Britton (Hazel) and Mary J Blige (Cha Cha) will return as time-traveling professional assassins still remains to be seen.
The upcoming season will also feature Ritu Arya playing Lila, a ‘chameleon’ with a twisted sense of humor, Yusuf Gatewood of the ‘Good Omens’ fame portraying Raymond, a born leader, and devoted husband and Marin Ireland as Sissy, a fearless mother who wants to explore what life and love have to offer.
The first season of The Umbrella Academy was praised for using a good number of songs in the episodes and the composer of the series has hinted that the second season will follow the same tradition.
Showrunner Steve Blackman has reportedly said that the second season will follow the source material, ie. the comics, more closely than the first season.
So far, apart from some teasers here and there only a date reveal trailer has been released by Netflix. But as the release date draws nearer, the streaming giants have dropped some pictures from the second season.
