CW’s The Flash is an American superhero tv series developed by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, and Geoff Jones. The series is based on DC Comic’s iconic character of the same name. Set within the ‘Arrowverse’, a shared universe centered on various interconnected tv series that is based on DC Comics characters, the series follows Barry Allen/ The Flash, a superhero/meta-human who gains superhuman speed and abilities following an accident at S.T.A.R labs. Barry learns that he is connected to extradimensional energy called the speed force, which gives him his abilities. He then starts using his powers to help humanity and encounters other speedsters and meta-humans, both good and bad. The series, which debuted in October 2014, is a spin-off series of another of CW’s superhero tv show, Arrow. The Flash has released six seasons spanning 133 episodes to date, with the sixth season concluding its run in May 2020.
Good news for the Arrowverse fans! CW has renewed the popular series for a seventh season but the upcoming season won’t premiere in October as is tradition but in January 2021. Delays in production due to the current situation worldwide is responsible for this change in schedule.
Throughout its six seasons, numerous characters have made appearances in the series. But the primary cast of the show remains essentially the same. The series features:
Grant Gustin as Barry Allen/ The Flash
Candice Patton as Iris West-Allen
Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow/ Killer Frost
Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramon/ Vibe
Jesse L. Martin as Joe West, among others
Characters from other tv series set in the Arrowverse have also appeared in the series, such as Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen/ Green Arrow), Melissa Benoist (Supergirl), etc.
Due to the production halts, the ‘mirror mistress’ arc could not be concluded in the sixth season. This means that in season 7, the arc would reach its conclusion and start a new one. Fans need not worry about Iris’ fate in the seventh season as showrunner Eric Wallace has confirmed that Iris and Barry will reunite and have a happy ending in the next season.
Being over six seasons long, The Flash has a long and complicated storyline with multiple series crossing over with each other. The series usually features two main enemies in a season, with one of them being the primary antagonist for the season. Together with his team, Flash has to face and overcome these obstacles. Iconic villains such as Reverse-Flash, Zoom, Savitar, Clifford Devoe, etc.
The series has also covered multiple story arcs from the comics including, the origin of the character; the ‘Flashpoint Paradox’ in which, Barry tries to change his past by running back in time; ‘Crisis On Infinite Earths’, where the entire ‘Arrowverse’ essentially gets rebooted.
In the sixth season of the fan-favorite series, Barry was supposed to sacrifice himself to save billions of lives, but thanks to Team Flash’s efforts, Barry ended up surviving the ‘Crisis’ event. Unfortunately for the ‘scarlet speedster’ and others, the speed force, which gives all speedsters their abilities, died due to the events of ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’. Resulting in Barry and all other beings connected to the speed force slowly losing their speed. This has had a massive consequence on Barry and others and how they deal with it will be interesting to see.
Soon after the debut of the series, The Flash became an instant success with the fans. Fans loved Grant Gustin’s portrayal of the titular character and adored the strong support cast. As the series progressed, the popularity of the show started soaring with it reaching its peak during the ‘Crisis’ event, which received both fan support and critical acclaim. Thus making it one of the greatest superhero tv shows to air to date.
