BBC’s Doctor Who is a British sci-fi series. The series is centered around a rogue time lord known as ‘The Doctor’. He explores the universe using a time-traveling ship called ‘TARDIS’. The Doctor is fascinated with humans and often brings human companions on his adventures. He also has many enemies who recur throughout the series. Due to him being a time lord, the Doctor can completely regenerate his body and often takes new forms and appearances. The show originally ran for 26 years, from 1963 to 1989. In 2005, BBC relaunched the series. But instead of a reboot, the 2005 adaptation was a continuation of the original run. To date, 13 actors have appeared as the Doctor. The most recent incarnation being Jodie Whittaker, the series’ first female doctor.
The show had a tremendous impact on British culture and quickly gained a cult status among fans worldwide. It has received numerous accolades and influenced generations of people. On 1st March 2020, the 12th season concluded its run.
Information on the release date is not available yet. Filming and production on it haven’t even begun yet. But showrunner Chris Chibnall has stated that the team has started working on the upcoming season, and is in the process of brainstorming ideas. And if all goes well, the next season will go on air somewhere in 2021.
But fans need not get disappointed. It is confirmed that the Doctor will return on the screens for this year’s festive episode. Production on it wasn’t affected by the lockdown since filming on it had wrapped up before the restrictions. The episode, titled ‘Revolution of The Daleks’ is scheduled to air at the end of this year.
Plot details of the 13th season remain unknown. But we assume that story arcs such as, the timeless children or the lone cyberman will be explored upon. The revelation from the previous season’s finale also hints at the possible plot of next season. The Doctor’s origins and the nature of the Division organisation will probably be delved into. The showrunner also hinted that the plans for the upcoming season will be big and ambitious.
At the moment, we don’t have much information about the cast of the 13th season. But, we can confirm that Jodie Whittaker, who’s playing the role of the Doctor since 2018, will be reprising her role. Apart from her, Graham (Bradley Walsh), Ryan (Tosin Cole) and Yaz (Mandeep Gill) might be seen in season 13. But at this point, it’s too early to say anything. Meanwhile, Sacha Dhawan, who plays the Master in the series, might also return in the upcoming season.
Fans will be glad to know that Showrunner Chris Chibnall will return to serve in the next season. Though, it is currently unknown if other writers from the series would be returning.
Unfortunately, there’s no footage of the 13th season available at the moment. A trailer will be made public once production on the upcoming season is finished. But fans will have to wait for some time till that happens. Stay tuned for more on this.
