Created by Seth MacFarlane, The Orville is an American sci-fi drama-comedy tv series. It is inspired by and as well as parodies many sci-fi sources. The show follows the crew of USS Orville, an exploratory spacecraft in the planetary union. Debuting on Fox in 2017, the series has two seasons till now. Twenty-six episodes have been released so far. The first season became a hit among the fans soon upon release, and the second season was praised by both viewers and critics. The show has been a commercial success as well. It became Fox’s highest-rated Thursday show. The second season, which began in December 2018, finished airing in April 2019.
In 2019, the favorite fan series got delayed, which left fans wondering about the future of the show. But fans can calm down as later it was confirmed that the Orville was renewed for a third season. Initially, the series was scheduled to hit the screens in the second half of 2020. But, the current pandemic has caused the series to stop production. It is now believed that production would resume after it’s safe to do so. This means that viewers won’t get to see their favorite characters on their screens until 2021 at the earliest.
Currently, we don’t know much about the plot of the next season. According to reports, the third season will have standalone episodes, as well as episodes that will delve into the character arcs and explore the world. The upcoming season will also pick up from where the previous season left off. It will answer some questions that were left unanswered in the previous seasons. The consequences of Isaac’s decisions will be dealt with. Furthermore, season 3 will also have more serious episodes that focus on character and world-building episodes alongside the funny ones.
The main cast of the sci-fi drama will probably remain the same. Reports suggest that Seth MacFarlane, the creator of the series, will reprise his character of Ed Mercer, with him Adrianna Palicki (Commander Kelly Grayson); Penny Johnson Jerald (Doctor Claire Finn); Scott Grimes (Lieutenant Gordon Malloy); Peter Macon (Lieutenant Commander Bortus) are also expected to make their return. Additionally, Anne Winters, of 13 Reasons Why fame, is confirmed to join the cast of the third season. She will be playing a character called Charly Burke. Fans of Lieutenant Alara Kitan (played by Halston Sage) will be happy to know that the team behind the series is thinking of ways to bring the character back. Although, she probably won’t return as series regular.
The second season of Orville featured 14 episodes. But the upcoming season will probably have one less episode. However, fans will be glad to know that the episodes of the third season will have more run time than the previous episodes.
The series has also changed networks recently. Season 3 of the show will be released on the American streaming service, Hulu. According to Seth Macfarlane, the creator of the series, the change of networks happened because of scheduling issues.
