With its release in 2018, DCEU’s ‘Aquaman’ quickly became one of its biggest hits, right next to Wonder Woman (2017) and Justice League (2017). The superhero flick starring Victor Momoa as ‘Aquaman’ and Amber Heard as ‘Mera’ marked its success by becoming the fifth-highest grossing film of 2018. The movie was a real treat for fans of DC as well as fans of superhero blockbusters since it contained a well-mixed balance of both comic book lore and accuracy as well as massive VFX and amazingly well-done CGI action sequences, the likes of which rivalled Marvel’s Avengers franchise.
Now, two years since its release, fans have been asking for updates on the sequel. Read to know the official announcements about Aquaman 2.
Release date: “Aquaman 2”
After a long wait, Warner Bros. has finally announced an official release date for the long-awaited sequel. Aquaman 2 is set to be released on 22 December 2022. Though it’s a long wait, fans are expecting it to be even better than the last movie. The development for the first movie had been in works since 2004 so it is safe to assume that this sequel too, had a long time for development.
Cast: “Aquaman 2”
Up until recently, a lot of the cast members were believed to be returning for their roles with Victor Momoa as ‘Arthur Curry’, Willem Dafoe as ‘Vulko’, Patrick Wilson as ‘Orm’, Nicole Kidman as ‘Atlanna’, Yahya Abdul-Mateen as ‘Black Manta’ and Dolph Lundgren as ‘Nereus’. Amber Heard was said to be coming back to her role as ‘Mera’ but due to the recent accusations of sexual assault against Johnny Depp that she’s facing, there are several petitions as well as uproar amongst fans to remove her from the role. Emilia Clarke might be re-casted as Mera. Some fans have also suggested Blake Lively for the role.
Plot: “Aquaman 2”
There haven’t been any official announcements from Warner Bros. or DCEU about the plot for Aquaman 2. No teasers or trailers for the film have been released either. Seeing how the movie is still being said to be in development, most of the details haven’t been given out. However, a writer has hinted at a possible Black Manta storyline which has piqued the interest of fans online.
Storyline: “Aquaman 2”
In the last instalment, we were introduced to the kingdom of Atlantis and it’s king Nereus and his daughter Mera. Set in post-Justice League world, Aquaman (2018) followed the war between the underwater Atlantis and the surface world in a twisted battle for inner politics and usurpation of power. Meanwhile, Arthur Curry aka ‘Aquaman’ attempts to stop his half-brother Orm’s attempt to rule the underwater kingdoms and is also pursued by David aka ‘Black Manta’. The movie established Arthur as king of Atlantis by its end and managed to do the character the justice it deserved for its comic book significance. The sequel is being speculated to pick up from this segment and also establish Black Manta as a much more important character.
Whatever be the case, I’m excited for this long wait to be over and bring us one of the most awaited sequels in superhero movies!
