The Ultraman series is a Japanese Superhero Series, dating all the way back to 1966. It is one of the most well known series of the tokusatsu superhero genre of Japan. The series was first produced by Tsuburaya Productions and launched in January 1966. After that, many miniseries and movies were also released by the same name and featuring the same character.

Who are the Ultramen?

The Ultramen belong to a technically advanced civilization and resemble humans in their outward appearance. The had evolved into such beings after they activated the Plasma Spark which took the place of their dead Sun. They are usually Red and Silver in colour, although many of them feature a tinge of other colours as well. They generally have yellow, almond shaped dome eyes that glow but the colour and shape generally varies. The Ultramen possess many special, superhero characteristics, including their ability to fire energy beams from their crossed hands and their ability to fly. Their society has a strong sense of justice and duty and most men of their civilization join the Space Garrison which is an elite force that fights against invaders and monsters in order to maintain peace in the entire Universe.

The Ultramen are send to other planets from their civilization to protect them from intergalactic threats. Due to the escalated levels of pollution on Earth and the light filtering effects of the atmosphere, the Ultramen can only survive on earth for a fixed period of time before their energy is fully depleted and they die. In order to sense that, all Ultramen are sent with colour timers or warning lights which indicates their energy supply. The lights blink if the frequency increases and turns from blue to red if the energy depletes or if the Ultraman has suffered mortal wounds.

It is almost impossible to permanently kill an Ultraman. There have been many instances where an Ultraman was killed, only to be revived again by another indivisible of his own species.

The cast of this 1966 superhero series consisted of Bin Furuya as Ultraman, Susumu Kurobe as Shin Hayata, Hiroko Sakurai as Akiko Fuji, Masanari Nihei as Mitsuhiro Ide, Sandayū Dokumamushi as Daisuke Arashi, Akiji Kobayashi as Captain ‘Cap’ Toshio Muramatsu and Akihiko Hirata as Dr. Iwamoto.
