Description

The much-awaited second season of the 86 anime series is good to go. Wait! Did we say season 2? Well, we know the anime debuted as a cour instalment. And the second part of the cour series was set to release this year. However, the studio decided to rebrand it as the sophomore season because of its promotional reasons. After all, the show has gained immense popularity since its debut in April this year.

The first instalment of 86 contains a total of 11 episodes. It mostly takes its inspiration from the light novel series of the same name. As of this moment, 10 volumes of the LN series have been published so far. Additionally, three volumes of the manga series are available. One of the most prominent anime studios, A-1 Pictures, picked it up for anime adaptation last year.

A-1 Pictures dispatched the anime series as a cour instalment. You must be wondering about what cour is, right? Cour is a multi-month break taken by the studio to break the series into two parts. Usually, the gap lasts around 3-4 months. This strategy helps in increasing the television ratings and the hype of the show. Furthermore, it also aids in improving the sales of the respective manga or light novel editions. The makers end the show with a cliffhanger. This way, the viewers don’t get their ending. Now, they are left with no other alternative except reading the source material.

86 Season 2: Plot Synopsis

86

The plot takes place in a fictional world where The Republic of San Magnolia is involved in a nine-year-long war with the Empire of Giad. The latter used various high-powered mechanised Legions to slaughter the forces of the Republic. This scenario forced the Republican army to introduce Juggernauts in the war. Talented pilots were chosen to handle these autonomous units. Pilots were collectively hailed as the “86”.

There was a time when 86 had equal rights. But the Alba government falsely persecuted the Juggernaut group. They were later categorised as subhumans. The 86 were stripped of their rights. Plus, they were not given any personal names. They had no option but to fight with the Empire.

One of the protagonists, Major Lena, decides to take the side of the Colorata minority. She raises her voice against the mistreatment of the 86 group and vows to end the ongoing discrimination against them. She is also a military officer in the San Mangolian army.

Later in the series, Lena gets the task of leading the Spearhead Squadron, a highly skilled military unit consisting of 86 elite soldiers. The name of the squad leader is Shinei. However, the squadron is infamous for its Handlers. Those who have been chosen to become the Handler of this squadron have lost their minds. In short, they went insane.
