Created by David Fresco, Netflix’s zombie horror-comedy series, Santa Clarita Diet, is a unique take on the genre. The series follows Joel and Sheila Hammond, a married couple who are real estate agents in Santa Clarita, California. Due to some unexpected events, Sheila (Drew Barrymore) turns into an undead zombie and has to live off of human flesh. With the help of her husband Joel (Timothy Olyphant), Sheila starts killing humans in order to survive, all the while adjusting to the zombie life, hiding the secret, and figuring out the mystery behind it all. The series, which was shot in a single camera, debuted in March 2017 and till now, three seasons of it have released, spanning 30 episodes. Season 3 of the ‘zom-com’ series premiered in March 2019.
Santa Clarita Diet Season 4: Release date
The third season of the series was well-received by the fans, who were expecting a new season to be announced shortly. The fourth season was expected to be released this year but unfortunately for the fans, Netflix decided to pull the plug on the much-loved series. Netflix hasn’t released any official statement regarding the reason behind the cancellation of our much-beloved show.
Santa Clarita Diet Season 4: Expected plot & story details
As previously mentioned, there is not much chance of seeing the fourth season of the series. But, the series certainly had quite a lot of storylines and arcs to explore. Season 4 was supposed to pick up from the ending of the third season and it could’ve explained the future of Joel, who (spoiler alert) seemed to have become a zombie in season 3 of the series. The repercussions of this, and how it would affect the dynamic between Joel and Sheila would’ve been one of the focal points of the series. Adding to new twists and turns to that would’ve made the fourth season a very interesting prospect.

If in the unforeseen future, the series does get picked up again, then fans will definitely get to see the old faces return on their screens. Cast and characters will pretty much remain the same with,
Drew Barrymore as Sheila Hammond, a realtor, Joel’s wife, and Abby’s mother, who becomes an undead zombie.

Liv Hewson as Abby Hammond, Joel, and Shiela’s daughter.
Skyler Gisondo as Eric Bemis, the son of Hammonds’ neighbor.
Apart from them, Natalie Morales (Anne Garcia), Jonathan Slavin (Ron), Ethan Suplee (Tommy), and others could return as recurring cast as well.
Diet: Reasons for Cancellation
Although the streaming giants did not provide any definitive explanations regarding the cancellation of the popular series, Netflix’s head of original content Cindy Holland suggested that there were multiple reasons behind the show getting canceled. Reportedly, the series was fast becoming very expensive for Netflix and wasn’t gaining enough viewership to warrant a new season for the series.
It’s not the first time that Netflix has decided to cancel a very popular show. We have a huge list of critically acclaimed Netflix originals like Daredevil, Luke Cage, I Am Not Okay With This, and many more which were canceled out of nowhere. The same thing also happened with Santa Clarita Diet as well. Despite finishing the third season with a huge cliffhanger, the makers decided to end thier journey with the show.
Many sources have reported that the financial problem between the media service provider and the investors can also be a major reason behind the whole cancellation process. The future of any show depends upon the profit it managed to earn and the type of reception it got from the people and the critics. It seems like the executives at Netflix were not really interested in investing thier precious money into this project anymore.
We know that the fans of the show don’t give a damn about the investors. But a strong and prominent TV network or media service provider always requires trustworthy investors. Which is why the show has been canceled. We have no idea whether we are going to watch the fourth season or not in the near future.

Viewers were eagerly waiting for news of series renewal when they were hit with the news of Netflix canceling the series. Fans were understandably upset and took to social media to express their disappointment and frustration, with some even submitting a petition to bring back the popular series.
